Between Loneliness and Care: Survival Strategies of Single Mothers in Lithuania

Online lecture by SPEAR project researcher at VMU Laura Lapinske

On June 30. 2022 at 18:00 CET, the Parents’ Academy at Vytautas Magnus University will organise a remote lecture "Between Loneliness and Care: Survival Strategies of Single Mothers in Lithuania". The lecture will be given by SPEAR project researcher Laura Lapinske. Laura is also a PhD candidate in Gender studies at Sodertorn University (Sweden) and a lecturer at the Social work department at Vytautas Magnus University. Recently, she has also taken the position of Equal Opportunities Coordinator at VMU.

The lecture is based on the research for Laura’s dissertation. During her long-term ethnographic research, she interacted and collaborated with single mothers in Kaunas, Lithuania. The results of the study revealed how women’s higher education not only does not help, but sometimes impedes the psychosocial well-being of single mothers. There is a constant tension produced by precarity and high expectations expressed by single mothers’ close ones. Relying on the results of her research, Laura will focus on the importance of care and love labour from a feminist perspective and social reproduction theory. She will talk about stigmatisation and gender inequality in contemporary Lithuanian society and present the survival strategies of single mothers.

The event will be held online and in Lithuanian. Participation is free and registration is required http://smf.vdu.lt/registracija
