Addressing gender inequalities in research through institutional change

Gender equality and inclusion are key metrics by which performance is measured in industry today. Research is no exception. While there is no quick fix to eliminating gender disparities, the EU has identified the structural changes needed in policies and programmes to increase the participation of women in research and innovation and improve their career prospects.

On the occasion of the International Women's Day celebrations, SPEAR joined the #EUsisterprojects to promote a joint initiative on Twitter to highlight our strong commitment to working together for gender equality in European research, to create a welcoming and friendly environment for all, especially the generation of young women, and to ensure that the research brings results that improve the lives of all of us and contribute to the reduction of gender inequalities.

SPEAR partner Vilnius University (VU) in Lithuania adopted its Gender Equality Plan (GEP) for the period 2021-2025, with a decision approved by the University Senate in December 2021.

On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2022, SPEAR is joining forces with EU Sister projects: CALIPER, Gender-SMART, SUPERA, LeTSGEPs, RESET, CASPER, ACT, GenPORT, MINDtheGEPs, ATHENA, GRANteD, Gearing-Roles, Equal4Europe, and Gender STI to share positive stories to encourage other women and especially young girls, to become engaged with Research & Innovation (R&I).

In September 2021, SPEAR partner Universidade NOVA de Lisboa approved its Gender Equality Plan (GEP) under the coordination of the NOVA Gender Working Group and the support of the University's top management and senior leadership.

Joint awareness-raising campaign on gender-based violence in research and academia

Leveraging on the International Day for the Elimination of violence against women (25 November), the SPEAR project is joining forces with sister projects involved in structural change for gender equality in research and academia (UNISAFE, SUPERA, TARGET, TARGETED-MPI, GEARING ROLES) as well as with other interested sister projects, organisations, and individuals, to raise awareness on gender-based violence in research and academia through a campaign running between 22 and 29 November.

On Sunday October 31, 2021, Natalija Mažeikienė (Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania), Aurelija Novelskaitė and Daiva Skučienė (Vilnius University, Lithuania), and Sybille Reidl (Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH, Austria), presented on the topic Promoting Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions: An Agenda for Feminist Institutionalism in Context of Neoliberalist Reforms at the “Gendering Transformations: Feminist Knowledge Production and Trans/national Activist Engagement” conference, during the session dedicated to “Narrating and Situating LGBT/Gender in Education”.

The EIGE Gender Equality Index 2021 is out!

The EIGE published its new Gender Equality Index 2021. The Index measures progress towards Gender Equality across EU-27 countries over 6 core domains: work, money, knowledge, time, power, and health, plus two additional domains violence, and intersecting inequalities.
